MAY 2023
May is the month in which we particularly honour and celebrate Our Lady. This month’s Messenger has several articles about Mary, Mother of God, including Vincent Sherlock’s touching letter of tribute to his own mother. We have different examples of what Christianity in action looks like: Legion of Mary founder Frank Duff’s ecumenism and work in support of the Jewish community; the Jesuit Social Services project bringing water to villages in East Timor; an account of the radical solidary of journalist Sally Hayden with refugees from North Africa – all examples of ‘enlarging the space of our tent’ (Isa 54:2) and engaging with others, especially those who are poor or afflicted.
The positive impact that reaching out to another can bring is demonstrated in John Cullen’s conversation with a homeless man and Labhras Loughran’s experience working with the St Vincent de Paul; Ciara Murphy reminds us of Pope Francis’ caution that the goals of an intense and rapid pace of life do not serve the common good; and as Pentecost approaches, we have a reflection on the gift of the Holy Spirit by Shane Daly SJ, newly-appointed Irish Jesuit Provincial.
And of course we have our regular prayers, reflections, crosswords, cookery and young people’s pages – there’s plenty to mull over in the May Messenger!
