AUGUST 2022

With the Feast of the Assumption on 15 August, a number of articles in the August Messenger focus on Our Lady: we reflect on the Visitation and recall that in proclaiming the Magnificat she was Christianity’s first preacher; we also read about the city of Mariupol: City of Mary, now sadly familiar to us since the invasion of Ukraine.  Synodality is essential for the future of the Church, says Pope Francis; we learn about the synodal pathway being explored across all Christian communities and dioceses and how we must also abandon a hierarchical approach to nature and consider it not as a resource for us to exploit, but as ‘the garden that God walks in’.

We read about the work of Mary’s Meals in feeding the world’s poorest children in their place of education plus the support and practical aid given to one man for his journey with humanitarian aid to Ukraine. We are encouraged to pray for and support the smaller and local businesses in our communities in the midst of economic and social crisis and of course we have all our popular regulars – reflections, scripture, crosswords and cookery for absorbing summer reading.
