The Messenger | April 2023

It is apt, in these times of war and destruction in our world, that Pope Francis asks us particularly for the month of April to pray for peace and the de-weaponisation of nation states. On this theme, David Stewart SJ writes that the threat of violence is in itself a form of violence. He describes a peaceful protest he participated in, which took the form of a prayer service outside a submarine base storing nuclear missiles. We encounter other forms of courage in profiles on Bl Edmond Rice, founder of the Christian and Presentation Brothers,  and two inspirational Jesuits, Walter Ciszek SJ and Willie Doyle SJ. And Andrea Hayes introduces the concept of ‘Eastering’ as a spiritual practice, something that we ‘do’ rather than something that we ‘have’.

Elsewhere, Peter McVerry links the historic crucifixion of Jesus with how he would be treated today; we have an extract from Jim Maher SJ’s new book, Reimagining Religion, which highlights the link between Mass and life; and Kevin Hargaden argues, in our information-laden society, for more reflection, discernment and wisdom in our decision-making.

With all our regulars – prayer, crosswords, cookery, Art and RE:LINK – April Messenger will keep you occupied and interested throughout the month.
